You could say that it started in about 400 BCE. Or, you could point out that we've used nanotechnology in medieval stained glass and in Damascus blade steel (not produced since 1700 CE or thereabouts). Or, you could refer to Richard Feyman's 1959 seminal talk titled 'There's lots of room at the bottom' for nanotechnology's origin story.
