You could say that it started in about 400 BCE. How? What happened then? Or, you could point out that we've used nanotechnology in medieval stained glass and in Damascus blade steel (not produced since 1700 CE or thereabouts). Or, you could refer to Richard Feyman's seminal talk titled 'There's lots of room at the bottom' for nanotechnology's origin story.

 

Very intriquing, especially the medieval stained glass and Damascus steel blade -- makes me want to know more! Will the links give the details?
